Wild Geese
You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting-- over and over announcing your place in the family of things. ~Mary Oliver

it's these expectations of a woman today.
to be beautiful, to be strong. to speak your mind and follow your heart.
to be comfortable with yourself, with your feelings, with all you are capable of. with sex.
is there beauty, at least, in the struggle? to be "who you are."
what if who i am is not these things? but rather, one who struggles to find out what it all means for me.

Being Human by Naima
I wonder if the sun debates dawn some mornings not wanting to rise out of bed from under the down-feather horizon
If the sky grows tired of being everywhere at once adapting to the mood swings of the weather
If the clouds drift off trying to hold themsevles together make deals with gravity to loiter a little longer
I wonder if rain is scared of falling if it has trouble letting go
If snow flakes get sick of being perfect all the time each one trying to be one-of-a-kind
I wonder if stars wish upon themselves before they die if they need to teach their young to shine
I wonder if shadows long to once feel the sun if they get lost in the shuffle not knowing where they're from
I wonder if sunrise and sunset respect each other even though they've never met
If volcanoes get stressed If storms have regrets If compost believes in life after death
I wonder if breath ever thinks about suicide I wonder if the wind just wants to sit still sometimes and watch the world pass by
If smoke was born knowing how to rise If rainbows get shy back stage not sure if their colors match right
I wonder if lightning sets an alarm clock to know when to crack If rivers ever stop and think of turning back
If streams meet the wrong sea and their whole lives run off-track I wonder if the snow wants to be black
If the soil thinks she's too dark If butterflies want to cover up their marks If rocks are self-conscious of their weight If mountains are insecure of their strength
I wonder if waves get discouraged crawling up the sand only to be pulled back again to where they began
I wonder if land feels stepped upon If sand feels insignificant If trees need to question their lovers to know where they stand
If branches waver in the crossroads unsure of which way to grow If the leaves understand they're replaceable and still dance when the wind blows
I wonder where the moon goes when she is hiding I want to find her there and watch the ocean spin from a distance Listen to her stir in her sleep
effort give way to existence

There is no fire like greed, No crime like hatred, No sorrow like separation, No sickness like hunger of heart,
And no joy like the joy of freedom. Health, contentment and trust Are your greatest possessions, And freedom your greatest joy.
Look within. Be Still. Free from fear and attachment, Know the sweet joy of living in the way. --The Buddha – from the Dhammapada, translated by Thomas Byron

1. i think californians are more laid back b/c there is not this mad rush to get everything done before summer ends. 2. mosquito bites swell up really big on me, especially on my legs. then they itch like crazy, i scratch them, and they scar. this is why my legs will never be like on one of those commercials.

| on education |
[01 May 2005|05:24pm] |
Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world. --Paulo Freire
this quote reminds me a lot of -herland- by charlotte perkins gilman, which i recently finished reading. (she also wrote -the yellow wallpaper-, which may be more familiar to you). it's about these men who stumble upon this land where only women and girls exist, and how it is far superior to the current america. i think some of you might enjoy it.

| on taking a stand |
[23 Apr 2005|11:40am] |
When you take a stand on something and work from there, you take different actions than you do when you believe that that something is inevitable and your effort is to try to make it "not so bad." When you know the certainty that things can be not just different but entirely resolved, you engage in the work in a more fundamental way. You don't wonder "if." You determine "how to." You look for root causes. You make different choices. --Lynne Twist from "The Soul of Money"
